Book: All the Buildings In Los Angeles

All the Buildings in Los Angeles *That I've Drawn So Far by James Gulliver Hancock.

Fun and interesting drawings of LA's landmarks and some interesting-to-the-author sites. I enjoyed noticing what was left out of Hancock's drawings as much as what he included. I enjoyed the colors.

"More than any other city I know, it required a conscious effort to join places together, to talk with people about places they have been, to build your own version of the city and make it your own. In LA you can't rely on the city taking your hand and showing you a good time -- you have to keep your eyes peeled and make a personal map of the place."

Mural: The big O in L.A.

I'm on jury duty in Downtown this week, and whenever I get free parking in DTLA I make it a point to explore. I found this here Olympic mural in a little parking lot on Broadway, between 2nd and 3rd Streets.  Did you know "olympic" is a copyrighted word? Anyway, this is from the 1984 summer sports games (that's a term you can use instead of the big O word) that took place right here in the damn fine City of Angels. What a beautiful mural! I tried to get close-ups of my favorite bits: The coliseum. Los Mexicanos. Check out the amazing nude male and female forms in the center. The 80s sho did know how to make a damn good mural. Too bad a lot of the 80s era murals in L.A. Have been tagged over or and/or ghosted completely. I'm happy I found this one before any more damage can be done. Enjoy.

Giants Live Here: Giant chair at L.A. Mart

Evidence that giants really do live in L.A.: A giant chair in the L.A. Mart parking lot. I guess they like fashion, too.
